When Bodies Speak Differently: Putting Judith Butler in Conversation with Mahatma Gandhi on Nonviolent Resistance

چکیده

This article puts political philosopher Judith Butler in conversation with Gandhi, on the topic of nonviolent resistance. More particularly, we compare them a systematic philosophical level. Although focus Gandhi’s more activist side, by delving into ontological presuppositions that and Gandhi share, can do some justice to how his activism is firmly rooted faith-based understanding world. We discuss four themes each which they complement other: namely, roots imperative; their rejection an instrumental view violence; resistance seen as communicative action; nonviolence viewed way life. discussion shows while have very different starting points vocabularies, tensions remain, there much scope for cooperation, solidarity alliance between religious nonreligious practitioners
